Please Help Our Military Men and Women in Obtaining Appropriate Disability Compensation for (Recognition of) Mental Health Injuries
Our returning troops injured from service in Iraq and Afghanistan often return to a battle at home – the battle to receive the treatment and compensation earned by their service. Mental health conditions are among the most common injuries; but often are not fully evaluated, diagnosed, and treated.
Lawyers Serving Warriors leads the fight to secure for service members and veterans the federal benefits earned through service to our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can help us assist these returning warriors if you are:
- Licensed as a psychiatrist or doctoral-level psychologist
- Qualified to perform a psychological or psychiatric evaluation
- Able to integrate forensic methods into evaluation
- Able to provide 10-14 hours of time free or at significantly reduced cost
- Interested in helping those who have served in our Armed Forces
Evaluations will consist of typical elements: 1) reason for referral, 2) background information, 3) description of assessment procedures, 4) recent stressors, 5) mental status exam, 6) results of psychological tests administered, 7) review of relevant medical records, 8) opinion summary, and 9) prognosis and treatment recommendations.
Additionally, evaluations will be consistent with a forensic approach; an evaluator will explicitly assess the consistency of factual information across multiple sources.
The Lawyers Serving Warriors Project provides guidance in the elements and methods of forensic assessment. Lawyers Serving Warriors will provide mental health volunteers with complete medical records, a statement of the case identifying the focus of inquiry, and guidance in complying with regulations that dictate the required content of evaluations. Volunteers will work closely with pro bono legal counsel representing the service member or veteran.
